The Jewel Jemila Story: How a Lagos Label Built Its Name on Fit

Jemila Yesufu did not start out in fashion. She studied marketing management at De Montfort University in Leicester, and it was only later, after enrolling for professional training at JemiRiana African Fashion in 2016, that she launched Jewel Jemila.

The reason she gives is straightforward. She loved clothes, and she could see a gap in the Nigerian market for pieces that actually flatter the woman wearing them rather than fighting her for it.

That idea still runs through everything we make. Our pieces are cut to fit every woman regardless of body type, and they are designed for movement, which matters more than people expect. A dress that photographs beautifully but pins your arms to your sides is not much use at a reception that runs past midnight.

What that looks like in practice

Bright colour, clean lines, and construction that does the work for you. The corset bodice on CARA has boning and a full lining built in, so the dress holds its own shape instead of relying on you to hold it. The floral embellishments on OMA sit at the hip specifically to define the waist. NAOMI pairs a velvet top with a silk satin skirt because each fabric does something different, and the dress needs both.

We work across quite a range, from silk satin occasion gowns like REMI and MELISSA through to linen pieces such as SIA and ROSE that you can wear on an ordinary Tuesday. What connects them is that none of them were designed to be worn once and forgotten.
