What Do I Wear to a Nigerian Wedding as a Guest?
Share
A Nigerian wedding is usually three separate events. The traditional ceremony, the church or white wedding, and the reception. They have different rules and they are often on different days. Turning up dressed for the wrong one is the most common mistake guests make.
The traditional ceremony
If aso ebi has been assigned, wear it. That is the whole point of the exercise and skipping it will be noticed.
If you are not part of the aso ebi group, go rich and go covered. Deep colours sit well against traditional settings. Something like our MELISSA in emerald or EBONY in burgundy works without pulling attention away from the family.

The church service
Cover your shoulders. Some churches insist, and even where they do not, a strapless dress feels wrong during a ceremony.
This is what OMA is for, with its high gathered neckline and cold shoulder detail, or AMY, which has fitted long sleeves and a keyhole neck. If you already own something strapless, throw a scarf over your shoulders. Our 90cm HERITAGE scarf does that job and comes off the moment you get to the reception.
No white. No ivory. No cream. Nothing that could read as bridal in a photograph.

The reception
Now you can be loud.
Receptions run long and involve dancing, so pick something you can actually move in. Chiffon is the sensible choice. ONAS has a halter neck and a flowing skirt. The AMY SET gives you a ruffled crop and a draped maxi skirt. If you want structure instead, REMI is a corset top with a fitted silk satin skirt.

Things people get wrong
Underdressing for the traditional and overdressing for the church. It is nearly always that way round.
New shoes. Nigerian weddings involve far more standing than you plan for.
Not asking. If you are unsure which events you are actually invited to, ask the couple. Nobody has ever been irritated by that question.
If you can only buy one thing
Get a chiffon maxi in a strong colour. It handles the church with a scarf, the reception without one, and the heat throughout. You will get several weddings out of it, which matters when the invitations start stacking up.
