Can I Wear Black to a Nigerian Wedding?

Can I Wear Black to a Nigerian Wedding?

When black is fine

Evening receptions. Almost always fine, and often the smartest thing in the room.

Anything in a hotel or a formal venue after dark. Black belongs there.

City weddings generally. Younger couples in Lagos and Abuja tend not to think twice about it.

When to think again

Traditional ceremonies. These are the most culturally specific part of the day, and some families still associate black with mourning. If you are close to the family, or if you are not sure how traditional they are, choose something else. It costs you nothing to avoid the question.

Church services in more conservative congregations. Same reasoning.

Daytime outdoor weddings. This is less about respect and more about heat. Black absorbs sun and you will suffer for it by two in the afternoon.

How to wear it well

The reason black sometimes looks sombre is not the colour, it is the styling. Black with black accessories and minimal jewellery reads as severe.

Break it up. Gold jewellery lifts black immediately. A coloured shoe or bag does the same. A scarf works particularly well, and our JEWEL TONE scarf, which runs from navy through wine to fuchsia, gives you a whole palette against a plain black dress.

Texture helps too. NAOMI has a beaded velvet bodice into a silk satin skirt, and in black it reads as rich rather than plain because the surfaces catch light differently.

If you want a safer option

Burgundy and deep emerald give you nearly all the elegance of black with none of the ambiguity. EBONY in burgundy or MELISSA in emerald will never raise an eyebrow at any part of a Nigerian wedding.

The honest summary

Black is fine at most Nigerian weddings now, particularly in the evening. If the wedding is traditional, rural, or you are close to a family whose views you do not know, pick something else and save yourself the worry.
