How Many Outfits Do I Need for a Nigerian Wedding Weekend?

Three, usually. Sometimes four if there is a welcome dinner.

The traditional ceremony, the church or white wedding, and the reception. Each one has a different tone, so one outfit will not stretch across all three.

Work out the real schedule first

Ask the couple for the running order before you plan anything. People consistently underestimate by about one event.

Also ask which parts you are actually invited to. Some guests get the reception only. That changes the answer completely and saves you buying things you do not need.

What each one needs

Traditional ceremony. Aso ebi if you were given it. If not, something rich and covered.

Church. Shoulders covered, no white, generous hemline. OMA or AMY both handle this without needing anything over the top.

Reception. Whatever you want. Chiffon if you plan to dance, so ONAS or the AMY SET. Silk satin if you want structure, so REMI or MELISSA.

How to cover three events with less

This is where a two-piece earns its money. The AMY SET is a ruffled crop and a draped maxi skirt. Worn together it is a full reception look. Split up, the skirt goes with a plain top for a welcome dinner and the blouse works with tailored trousers.

The scarf trick

A dress you have already worn, with a scarf over the shoulders and different jewellery, reads as a different outfit to nearly everyone in the room.

This is how you get away with repeating across a weekend, and everybody does it. A 90cm scarf weighs nothing and covers you for a church ceremony, works as a headwrap in strong sun, and changes the register of an outfit entirely.

Packing for it

If you are travelling and space is tight, take chiffon. It folds down to nothing and recovers from a suitcase with a bit of steam.

Silk satin creases badly under compression. If you are bringing MELISSA or REMI, roll it rather than folding it, and hang it the moment you arrive.

Linen will look like linen when you unpack it. Fine for a daytime event, wrong for a ballroom.

Two things always worth bringing

A shoe you can walk on grass or sand in, because Nigerian weddings are outdoors more often than people plan for.

And a spare of whatever holds your dress together. A strap, a hook, the right bra for the neckline. You will not find a replacement in an unfamiliar town on a Saturday morning.
